Fashion and Technology: Smart Tools for Smart Girls

Sewing Lab, Wightman Hall

Su An and Ling Zhang , Fashion Merchandising and Design Faculty
Appropriate for grades 6 - 9
Cost $50, due a registration

"What do I need science and math for? I am going to be a fashion designer." All too frequently these types of statements are made of young girls who are not able to make the connection between a STEM education and what they perceive to be relevant to their lives. In today's society, STEM concepts have grown so integral to the economy that middle and high-school students need to experience workplace-relevant applications of STEM-related tools and engage in activities to show how technology is applied to solve real-world problems. Additionally, students that study STEM content in an inquiry-based environment are more likely to be engaged learners and are more likely to seek STEM related career pathways.

Like other industries, the fashion industry is also looking for young female professionals who can apply STEM concepts and are comfortable utilizing technology to envision new products and collaboratively solve apparel design problems. Much of fashion today involves the use of state-of-the-art technology, combined with innovative fibers and fabrics. This short course focuses on allowing middle-school girls to engage in STEM learning through Fashion and Technology.
