STEM Program Coordinator

Under the supervision of the Education Director, the incumbent will be responsible for oversight of the SPARK!Lab Smithsonian invention and innovation space in the Alden B. Dow Museum of Science and Art, and assisting the School and Public Program Coordinator with science program development and implementation. Overall the position will assist in increasing and enhancing the customer experience in the areas of science, technology, engineering and math both in and outside of the museum environment. This position works 29 hours per week, including weekends, occasional evenings and some holidays.


The duties of this position include, but are not limited to:

Spark! Lab Supervision

Daily Floor Management: This position is responsible for day-to-day facility operations of the Spark! Lab, including:

  • Opening and closing the Spark!Lab space
  •  Assist with recruiting, hiring staff to ensure adequate staffing at all times including training and oversight of lab education staff and volunteers
  •  Preparing hands on activities for visitor use
  • Restocking, replacing, or repairing (as needed) necessary supplies

On-the-floor Facilitation

  • Spearhead facilitation of activities with visitors in a safe and appropriate manner, and assess and maintain Spark! Lab safety
  • Responsible for knowing the educational content of kit activities in Spark! Lab as well as being able to present and interpret content or concepts to visitors in a professional, friendly, and accessible manner
  • Regularly communicates information about Spark! Lab daily operations to the Education Director

 Activity, Program, and Evaluation Development

  • Collaborates with Education Department staff to develop and produce engaging hands on activities and programs for use in Spark! Lab that align with the goals and licensing agreement for Spark! Lab
  • Identify and evaluate activities and programs, and make recommendations
  • Help to maintain Spark! Lab by inspecting for damaged or missing materials, keeping equipment cleaned, and reporting problems
  • Support special events and programs related to Spark! Lab and museum as requested
  •  Make connections between the Spark! Lab and other programs in the museum

School Programs Assistance

  • Assist the School and Public Program coordinator with creation of science tour content
  • Maintains knowledge and ability to serve as a Center Educator for programs/tours for both museums.
  • Work closely with School & Public Program Coordinator as well as the Education Director to plan and implement STEM programs to advance the Center’s objectives and goals.

Public Programs

  • Assist with planning and hosting STEM-based events
  • Assist with planning and implementation of youth science classes & camps throughout the year
  • Serve as an instructor for youth science classes, outreach, scout programs and birthday parties as needed



  • Must have the ability to interact with diverse audiences and age groups to help facilitate activities and innovation
  • Must be a professional, responsible, reliable, motivated team player with strong interpersonal and organizational skills
  • Must have knowledge of informal and interpretation learning techniques, with the ability to conceive, plan, build, prototype, audience test, refine and pilot and/or put into informal learning activities, practices and programs
  • Ability to effectively serve as part of an Education team communicating back to supervisor in a clear and proactive way
  • Must be able to work weekends with some evenings, and holidays
  • Ability to forecast, track and replenish inventory based on visitation patterns and material use
  • Work under pressure in a fast-paced environment, able to prioritize multiple tasks and demands and seek supervisory assistance as appropriate or needed to ensure safety
  • The position will require frequent walking, bending, standing and moderate lifting

Education and Experience Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in science or education or related field; or 2 years equivalent experience
  • One to two years’ experience developing curriculum content, teaching, and evaluation preferred
