Join a team of adventure-minded water stewards as you engage youth and adults in hands-on, environmental research programming onboard a traditionally rigged, tall ship schooner. Programs vary in length and content, yet the mission always remains: to foster environmental stewardship of the Saginaw Bay Watershed and the Great Lakes ecosystem.
Work closely with the Director of Education to prepare for and oversee all shipboard educational programs: Science under Sail, Legends of the Saginaw River, Family Ecology Sails, Windward Bound and more.
Be willing to live aboard the vessels for extended periods of time while at distant ports and under transit Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Ensure all educational equipment is in good working order, organized at all times and accessible to crew and volunteer educators prior to the start of each program
Facilitate inquiry-based, hands-on lessons regarding Great Lakes ecology, local history and nautical skills for all ages with a strong focus placed on supporting Next Generation Science Standards for K-12 youth
Mentor crew and volunteer educators in programmatic aspects
Coordinate teachers, students, volunteers and crew educators during all aspects of a program while aboard vessels
Communicate concisely and effectively with First Mate, Captain, Director of Marine Operations and Director of Education
Successful candidates will be physically fit, energetic, outgoing, friendly and have an ability to adapt to change quickly. The ideal candidate should exhibit a passion for outdoor experiential education and will have or be working towards a degree in outdoor education, environmental education, or natural sciences. Preference will be given to applicants with sailing experience, expertise in Great Lakes environmental issues and/or experience with experiential education curriculum. Pre-employment drug screening and criminal background check mandatory.
This position is full-time, seasonal. The Shipboard Education Coordinator will be scheduled for most educational programs. On days when the ship is not underway (s)he will meet with the Director of Education preparing for upcoming programs and assisting the Director of Education with other administrative tasks. A successful candidate will have open/flexible availability and will be able to attend mandatory volunteer educator training in early April.
This position is full-time April 1st through October 1st with some flexibility. Some availability will be necessary in March to train and prepare for our volunteer educator training.
A taxable stipend of $380/week will be provided. Meals and overnight accommodation provided while delivering overnight programs and other travels away from homeport. Accommodation is available aboard Appledore IV or Appledore V during the sailing season with the understanding that the vessel will be regularly engaged in day and evening sails.
