Electric Motor Drives Summer Intern

The objective of the student programs at Nexteer Automotive is to select students with high potential and provide them with “real world” experiences. Work assignments expose students to many of the company’s products, processes, procedures, problems, resources, staff areas and people so that they become aware of the career opportunities at Nexteer Automotive. Assignments are designed to assimilate acquired classroom education with actual hands on work experience in a technical environment.  In addition, Nexteer Automotive gains the opportunity to find new talent to enhance productivity.

We are looking for an inquisitive, highly self-motivated individual who is eager to learn and has good attention to detail and time management skills.  This position is responsible for electric drive control analysis, modeling and test for electromechanical actuators and sensors.  This position allows the candidate to see the development of the project – from requirements to concept.  The ideal candidate will be eager to apply and explore their skills in simulation, implementation and test.


  • Responsible for motor control system analysis, modeling, and design for electric drive products
  • Verifies and calibrates motor control characteristics
  • Validation of motor control characteristics on laboratory dynamometers
  • Provides technical expertise for projects incorporating complex electromechanical (“Mechatronic”) systems
  • Verifies and calibrates modeling tools and corrects deficiencies in designs and prototypes


  • Graduate student pursuing MS or PhD  in Electrical Engineering with emphasis in motor or system controls
  • Knowledge of motor control theory design and analysis
  • Strong computer skills, and knowledge of simulation tools (e.g. Matlab/Simulink) is required
  • General competency in all core fields (electronics, electromagnetic)
  • Excellent problem solving techniques
  • Knowledge of system synthesis, analysis and verification techniques
  • Good organization and documentation abilities
  • Ability to manage & support multiple activities (time management skills)
  • Strong work ethic
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and with others
  • Proficiency with Microsoft office tools (Excel, Word, Powerpoint)
